Corfu - Athens Sailing Adventure 2020

May 2020 we are taking our fleet on a sailing adventure to Athens and back from Corfu. The trip will run as a relaxed Assisted Bareboat Flotilla with a few skippered yachts. Join the adventure as a whole bareboat or as part of a skippered yacht, or come onboard our training yacht.

02 MAY 2020 - 31 MAY 2020
Only €1425

Our small fleet will be sailing from Corfu to Athens and back in May 2020. Bringing the opportunity to sail in new areas with the comfort of our relaxed assisted bareboat flotilla. We have options for bareboat, skippered or training yachts for this adventurous sailing trip. A great chance to see somewhere new and get some fantastic sailing in at the start of the season when we have space to sail and wind to sail in!

Which yachts are available?

Ellen May - Beneteau 423 Oceanis
She is available as a bareboat for this trip. Onboard are three double cabins all with ensuite heads. With slab reefed mainsail and a large furling genoa she sails really well. She is well suited for up to 6 friends or family.

Ariadne - Beneteau 423 Oceanis
She is available as a bareboat for this trip. Onboard are three double cabins all with ensuite heads. With a 2019 sails, she will be flying down to Athens and back beautifully. She is well suited for up to 6 adults for this trip.

Fleurie - Bavaria 45 Cruiser
She is available as a bareboat or skippered for this trip, she is already booked for the return leg, so only Corfu - Athens available. With three spacious double cabins and heads, as well as a very comfortable inside and outside living space, she is a very comfortable way to sail. Her in-mast furling mainsail and furling genoa make her simple to sail short handed but with her winged keel she still performs very well.

Evelyn May - Beneteau 423 Oceanis RYA Training Vessel
She is available for mile building on this trip. This yacht will be taking the long way to Athens, to include some passages over 60nm which will be handy for anyone building miles for Yachtmaster. The route will allow each crew to have skippering experience during day and night. As well as being a really exciting place to sail, this trip offers some new challenges for navigation and sailing conditions so perfect for those wanting to better their sailing skills.

Nimos - Nautitech 440 (Catamaran)
She is available as a skippered yacht for this trip, you can either book the whole yacht or by the cabin. Onboard are three large double guest cabins and one skippers cabin all with ensuite heads. With a huge amount of space inside and out you will be very comfortable onboard. The skipper will show you the ropes as much as you like or sit back and enjoy the continuously changing landscapes.

All our yachts come with outboard, dinghy, fuel,  bedding, towels, end cleaning and all the required safety equipment. You will be booking direct with the owner so don’t worry about additional fees etc. The yachts have no logos or advertising so it really is yours for the trip. Please see our yacht pages for more information on the yachts.

What is the idea?

We always have people asking if we sail in other areas, not just Corfu…. well here is your chance! This May (2020) we are taking the whole fleet from our normal base in Corfu to Athens and back over the whole month. The aim is to have all the boats in a relaxed ‘mini-flotilla’. This doesn’t mean we all have to be in sight of each other and have breakfast, lunch and dinner together. It just means there is a bit of back up if anyone needs it.

We plan to have everyone onboard on the 2nd of May in Gouvia Marina and depart on the 3rd. We will be in Athens (Alimnos Marina) on the weekend of 16th/17th May to change over crews before the trip North. The route is (as always) weather dependant however we have a few aims for the trip:

  • Spend time in places slightly off the beaten track.
  • Explore land based attractions where possible.
  • Get in some good sailing!

Sailing in May can be quiet changeable as far as the weather goes. Therefore we want to point out, there may be some cooler days, some wet days and possibly a day playing cards in a taverna. Just remember this is all part of the adventure!

To take a bareboat on this trip we are asking that you have minimum RYA Day Skipper / ICC and you have some experience in heavier weather (not hurricanes just more than F5!)

To come onboard a skippered yacht you need to have a smile and be ready for some fun sailing!

Where are we going?

The route is going to vary depending on weather conditions and what everyone wants to do. Here is a rough route plan as an idea of distances we will sail and places we will aim to visit whilst on the normal route;  (we have included rough mileage as a guide)

Day 1 - Arrival Day
Everyone will move onboard and get unpacked, fridges full and ready to sail. We will have a informal brief at a cafe/bar where we will discuss the route and general plans for the trip. The team will sign the boats out so we are ready to depart on Day 2.

Day 2 - 3 - North Ionian (30nm + 35nm)
The plan is to move fairly quick through the North Ionian as most of our guests will have seen this area already. However we will be stopping at Paxos (of course!) before heading to Lefkas or Preveza.

Day 4 - 5 - South Ionian (10nm + 20nm)
A couple of shorter days to enjoy some of the islands in the South such as Meganissi/Kalamos/Kastos. Some stunning places to visit here and there are still a few quieter places in May. Depending on conditions we might try to do a BBQ in a bay….. :)

Day 6 - 10 The Gulf, during this part we will be flexible as always with the route however there are some great options that we would like to visit. As a rough guide of distances we will aim to stop at or near by the following places:

-  Patras (15/25nm)
A busy town but with some amazing history.

- Trizona Island (15nm)
The only inhabited island in the Gulf of Corinth. A definite must see on this trip. With only 250 people living there and no cars or bikes, it is a peaceful place to anchor.

- Itea/Galaxai (22nm)
This is the closest point to Dephi if anyone is interested in taking a bus up through the hills. It is a very well maintained site and definitely worth the effort to see.

- Xylokastro or Corinth (38nm) - The last stop in the Gulf before the canal. We aim to stop somewhere close to the canal to get a morning slot going through. There are some nice options to choose from, with some great beaches.

Day 10/11 - Corinth Canal Day, Korfos/Salimina (18nm)
Experience the stunning engineering gone into creating this canal. Taking 12 years to build, 6.4 km long and 21m wide it is pretty impressive to see from land, let alone sail down. Once at the other end we will either head slightly North or South depending on conditions, to a quiet spot to share photos and a cold Alpha!

Day 12 - 14, Poros/Aegina/Hydra Area (22nm)
There are many options on this side of the canal but we aim to is to visit as many of these beautiful spots whilst we can. May is definitely the best time to be here so we are going to make the most of it.

Day 14 - Alimnos Marina  (10nm)
Depending on flight times we may get in the night before but as always we like to be flexible with this

Here we will clean the boats, re-fuel, re-stock and change crews (or not), ready for our trip back North. If you would like to do both ways then get in touch as there will be a good discount. We aim to do a similar route on the way back up depending on weather of course. As we mentioned before this is a rough route and it is a relaxed flotilla. If you want to leave the group then you can.

Mile Building / Sail Training Route.

During this trip at least one of our RYA Training Yachts (Evelyn May and maybe Ellen May) will be sailing to Athens and back on a mile building trip. The aim is to not only have a great time and fantastic sailing but to also build up recorded miles needed for Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore.

This means there will be passages over 60nm to be skippered by you, this means you are the skipper for the trip. So you will be passage planning, provisioning, sail selecting, crew management, organising the sailing and mooring the yacht. Of course there will be an instructor onboard, but they will try to stay quiet for these trips as you are the skipper. During the trip you will also get chance to sail at night, including entering a harbour at night.

As we are all going the same way, we will definitely meet up together at points during the trip for a catch up, but the main aim for this boat is to get as many miles as possible in!

Some of the possible passages during the trip are:

Corinth Route

  • Corfu - Preveza/Lefkas (65Nm)
  • Lefkas - South of Kefelonia (60Nm)
  • Mesalonghi - Idea (60Nm)
  • Aegina - Serifos (60Nm)
  • Sifnos - Poros (60Nm)

Peloponnese Route
This route is fully weather dependant.

  • Idhra - Kythrira (70Nm)
  • Kalamata - Katakolo (90Nm)
  • Zakynthos - Meganissi (60Nm)
  • Lefkas - Corfu (60Nm)
