Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Preparation

Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Preparation

Tailor made to what you need.

A Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence, Coastal or Offshore is pretty close to top of the ladder when it comes to sailing qualifications. As the qualification can be commercially endorsed, it is an important ticket to get into the world of professional skippers or a great milestone in your sailing career.

Below are the pre-requists to the two types of Yachtmaster qualifications available:

Yachtmaster Coastal Candidate pre-requisites are:

  • 30 days,
  • 2 days as skipper,
  • 800 miles,
  • 12 night hours

If you hold the Coastal Skipper course certificate this is reduced to:

  • 20 days,
  • 2 days as skipper,
  • 400 miles,
  • 12 night hours.

Half the qualifying sea time must be conducted in tidal waters. See the RYA website for more details on qualifying passages.

Successful candidates that become commercially endorsed will be qualified to skipper a commercial vessel up to 24m in length or 200gt up to 30 miles from a safe haven.

Yachtmaster Offshore Candidate pre-requisites are:

  • 50 days,
  • 2,500 miles including at least 5 passages over 60 miles measured along the rhumb line from the port of departure to the destination,
  • acting as skipper for at least two of these passages and including two which have involved overnight passages.
  • 5 days experience as skipper.

At least half this mileage and passages must be in tidal waters. All qualifying seatime must be within 10 years prior to the exam.

See the RYA website for more details on qualifying passages.

Successful candidates once commercially endorsed will be qualified to skipper a commercial vessel up to 24m in length or 200gt up to 150 miles offshore.

Candidates must have the equivalent knowledge of the Yachtmaster Theory course and have an in date 1st Aid Certificate as well as a VHF radio certificate.

Sailing Practice

The preparation week (normally 5 days) is not run in a course format where the instructor is teaching subjects, but rather it is tailor made to work on any part of the syllabus that the candidates want to work on, or that the instructor feels important.

The examiner will then come onboard for a minimum of 8/12 hours (YMC or YMO) per candidate. During the exam they will ask the candidates to each take them on a passage. During the passage they will ask various questions on parts of the syllabus. This isn’t to catch you out, more to find out what level of knowledge and experience you are at.

Price: £800 per person

The price for the preparation week includes; Instructor for preparation week, the accommodation on board, breakfast and lunch onboard, bedding, towels, fuel, mooring fees and wet weather gear.

Excluding flights, transfers and exam fee. This fee is payable to the RYA directly when submitting the application form (£181 YMC or £210 YMO).

For more information on the preparation week and exam dates get in touch.
